Streaming potential along the surface of polysulfone membranes: a comparative study between two different experimental systems and determination of electrokinetic and adsorption parameters

چکیده
Because of the diversity of streaming potential and zeta potential values reported in the literature, even for similar membranes and external conditions (hydrodynamics and solution chemistry), the influence of measuring cells and procedures in electrokinetic parameters has been studied. For this purpose, two different experimental systems (named EKA and NIS) with similar hydrodynamic parameters, but different electrodes and electrical devices, are used for the electrokinetic characterization of a commercial polysulfone membrane. Detailed descriptions of measurement procedures and the influence of external conditions (flow direction, electrode polarization, etc.) are made since they could contribute to the variability of experimental results. On the other hand, an electrokinetic characterization of the polysulfone membrane in contact with NaCl solutions at different concentrations and pH was carried out by using the EKA system. An heterogeneous specific adsorption of anions on the membrane surface (Freundlich isotherm) was assumed in order to determine parameters such as the membrane surface charge density, the Gibb’s free energy and the number of adsorption sites per unit of membrane area. However, at low salt concentration (∼10−3 M) the membrane proper charge is mainly due to dissociation of some kind of acid groups on the membrane surface (isoelectric point: 3.1 ± 0.1), and the site dissociation model has been used to obtain the membrane acid equilibrium constant and the surface density of acid sites. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Characterization of active and porous sublayers of a composite reverse osmosis membrane by impedance spectroscopy, streaming and membrane potentials, salt diffusion and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements
Electrokinetic, structural and surface chemical characterizations of both active and porous sublayers of a composite (polyamide/polysulfone) reverse osmosis membrane were carried out by different techniques: (i) electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) allows both electrical and geometrical characterizations using equivalent circuits as models; (ii) surface chemical composition of the activ...

Surface and bulk membrane have been electrically and chemically characterized by different kinds of measurements. Tangential streaming potential, impedance spectroscopy, membrane potential and salt diffusion were measured with a porous polysulfone membrane for ultrafiltration when it was in contact with NaCl solutions at different concentrations (5×10 c 5×10 M). From these experiments some memb...

Changes in streaming and membrane potentials measured across a commercial microporous polysulfone membrane as a result of the adsorption of differently charged macromolecules were studied. Measurements were carried out with different NaCl solutions M) and their mixtures with a polyanion (dextran sulfate or DS) and a polycation (diethylaminoethyl or DEAE-dextran). From electrokinetic and electro...
متن کاملEffect of hydration of polyamide membranes on the surface electrokinetic parameters: surface characterization by x-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy.
The surface and the solid/liquid interface of two polyamide membranes, one experimental (B0) and one commercial (NF45), have been characterized by X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and zeta potential, respectively. The surface roughness, determined by AFM data analysis, is different for the two membranes, and results show that the commercial NF45 membrane ...
متن کاملZeta potential determination of polymeric materials using two differently designed measuring cells of an electrokinetic analyzer.
The so-called zeta potential can be determined through electrokinetic measurements and indicates the status regarding surface charges along the interface between solids and liquids. Surface charge gives us information about the condition, quality, and characteristics of a macroscopic surface in the polar medium. In our study the zeta potential was determined using a "SurPASS" electrokinetic ana...
